Building ASMEs Foundation for the Future Part Two

Building ASMEs Foundation for the Future Part Two Building ASMEs Foundation for the Future Part Two Building ASMEs Foundation for the Future Part TwoMay 26, 2017 ASME President Keith RoeTo the ASME Community Greetings Once MoreAs promised, I am pleased to have this opportunity to continue with the second of three articles we began in the brde edition of ASME nachrichtensendung under the rubric Building ASMEs Foundation for the Future. Last time, I had the chance to introduce you to the process that was initiated this year ASMEs project to re-engineer the way it serves its historic mission and engages its members and stakeholders in order to create a truly world-class professional engineering organization for the future. One way to understand great engineering is as the successful execution of great design. And you might say that great design itself is a marriage of practical understanding of what we know works with a vision of whats possible. To design and engineer a great ASME for t omorrows world, ur volunteer leadership and senior staff have worked tirelessly to gain deep insight into our success to this point our heart and soul and to envision a truly empowered ASME of tomorrow. The first result of their work was the formulation and official adoption last year by ASMEs Board of Governors of a new and overarching enterprise strategy a great design for ASMEs future. The crux of that work was the Governors charge to us all, and it bears repeating hereBy 2025, ASME is called upon to be the go-to organization to help address key technology-related challenges in the public interest in a manner that engages core engineering constituencies (government, academia, industry, engineers, students, and technology-development professionals) to increase its mission impact as measured by reliable metrics...Simply put, ASME had to be ready to change and to grow in the following ways we had to enhance our relevance and impact among our global constituencies by becoming the go-to organization for advancing engineering technology we had to improve our products and services in both our traditional and new areas as well as our product sophistication and we had to improve our engagement of members and stakeholders and deliver value at every level. Realizing the Governors design is what weve been about this year.At this point you likely know that to do it, ASME elected to prioritize its present and future efforts around five core engineering technologies which we believe represent significant areas for the future development of mechanical engineering. They arePressure TechnologyAdvanced ManufacturingRoboticsBioengineeringClean EnergyBy focusing on these areas and engaging more directly with members and other stakeholders, we will provide the basis, broadly speaking, to build our product and services portfolio that will over time position ASME as the go-to organization in these vital technologies of the future. How do we build this foundation? Less broadly kn own but not less important, ASMEs staff and volunteer leadership recognized that to foster the world-class excellence we seek, ASME had to strive for increased excellence in our ground game. Day in and day out, excellence, engagement and value for stakeholders are simply indispensable to ASMEs future success. To foster such excellence and to take our organization from good to great, we had to operationalize the new strategy. In a transformative initiative, the staff and volunteer leadership, working with the Board of Governors, defined a platzdeckchen of linked 10 year 3 year 1 year goals that would guide all of us to achieving our vision as a go-to technology leader. Underpinning this initiative is an Integrated Operating Plan that will guide us to build our capabilities and provide outstanding products for our members and constituents that meet these 10-3-1 goals. These efforts will insure our continued focus on technology and our professional foundation, further strengthening AS MEs heart and soulAt the same time, to support the implementation of the strategy, we formed five Presidential Task Forces for the 2016-2017 term to address the practical challenges of achieving such excellence, in the following areasStrategy Planning (Chair John Goossen)Student Early Career Engineers Engagement (Chair Terry Shoup)Industry Leadership Engagement (Chair Stacy Swisher Harnetty)Group (Divisions and Sections) Engagement/Alignment (Chair Rick Marboe)Building a High-Performing Board (Chair Bill Wepfer)The as yet untold story of the 2016-2017 term, in my view, is the tireless work of all who served on these Presidential Task Forces this year. Your colleagues, some 50 or so ASME volunteers and staff who served and made them possible, have met either weekly or biweekly all through this year in the effort. They have worked their hearts out, reviewing our organization from top to bottom to an unprecedented level of detail and formulating detailed recommendations based on thei r review. Their recommendations to the Board of Governors have been so extensive that two full extra meetings of the Board were instituted just to consider them all. I will share more of the nitty-gritty of those recommendations, which are really the marching orders for ASMEs next chapter, in my next letter to you. Hows that for a cliff-hanger?Till then, please accept my thanks and best wishes for your dedication to our great Society. We are well on our way to that bright future will you join me?With all best wishes Keith Roe, ASME PresidentRead Part One of Presidents Roe series on Building ASMEs Foundation for the Future.

Marine Corps Physical Fitness Considerations

Marine korporation Physical Fitness ConsiderationsMarine Corps Physical Fitness ConsiderationsMarine Corps basic training has the reputation of being the toughest of all the services. It most certainly is the longest, at about 12 1/2 weeks. It has been said time and time again by former Marines that Marine Corps recruit training was the most difficult thing they ever had to do in their entire lives. There are two locations which turn recruits into Marines the Recruit Training Depot at Parris Island, South Carolina, and the Recruit Training Depot at San Diego, California. Where you go depends largely on where you enlist. Those who enlist west of the Mississippi River will likely go through boot camp in San Diegowhile those in the East will attend at Parris Island. All women attend Marine Corps basic training at the Parris Island location. In fact, the Marine Corps is the only service that doesnt have coed basic. Female Marines train on their own, separated from the men. Basic Trai ning Fitness Requirements Before you are allowed to ship out to Marine Corps basic training, youll be required to pass a physical fitness test, called Initial Strength Test, or ISP. The test requirements (regardless of age) are MALE Pull-ups 2Sit-ups 35 (two minutes)1.5-mile zustrom 1330 FEMALE Flexed arm piste 12 secondsSit-ups 35 (two minutes)1-mile run 1030 Youll pass the same test shortly after arrival at basic. Those who fail are transferred to the PCP (Physical Conditioning Platoon). PCP is tough PCPs objective is physical fitness, and thats what youll be concentrating on while in the program. Youll remain in the PCP until you can meet the standards, but for a minimum of 21 days. Graduation Fitness Requirements In order to graduate from Marine Corps basic training, you must pass the final PFT (Physical Fitness Test). The PFT has three events pull-ups (Flexed arm hang for females), abdominal crunches, and a three-mile run. The graduation standards are MALE Age 17-26Pull-up s 3Crunches 50 (two minutes)3-mile run 2800 Age 27-39Pull-ups 3Crunches 453-mile run 2900 FEMALE Age 17-26Flexed arm hang 15 SecondsCrunches 50 (two minutes)3-mile run 3100 Age 27-39Flexed arm hang 15 SecondsCrunches 45 (two minutes)3-mile run 3200 After Basic Training All Marines are granted 10 days leave (vacation) immediately after basic training. Following leave, Marines who are in the Infantry Field (MOS of 0311 Rifleman, 0331 Machinegunner, 0341 Mortarman, 0351 Assaultman, or 0352 Anti-Tank Guided Missleman), attend the 51-day School of Infantry, at either Camp Lejeune, NC, or Camp Pendleton, CA. This school also doubles as their Marine Corps job school so upon graduation they proceed to their first duty assignment. All other Marines attend the 22 day Marine Combat Training (MCT) course, also located at Camp Lejeune or Camp Pendleton. Upon graduation from this course, they proceed to their Marine Corps job training school.

You Probably Want to Change Careers #8212; So Here#8217;s How to Do That

You Probably Want to Change Careers 8212 So Here8217s How to Do That You Probably Want to Change Careers 8212 So Here8217s How to Do That In the survey, we foundthat half of those who said they wanted to change careers had entered their careers just because their were jobs available, says Ruth Veloria, executive dean at the University of Phoenix Business School. I think what were witnessing is a large-scale lack of careers that are interesting or engaging personally. Some people had to make some compromises, especially in the last eight or nine years, and now things are starting to change in the economy. Now, more people are wondering Is it time for me to make a change? The study also found that people with annual salariesbetween $75,000 and $100,000 were most likely to have lost interest in their fields (45 percent) and feel burned out (40 percent).Veloria believes this results from the plateauing affect many professionals feel when they reach this level in their careers. When we en counter folks in that bracket at University of Phoenix, oftentimes they are in the middle of their careers, and they are feeling like their opportunities are beginning to narrow in their field, Veloria explains. They can feel like they are becoming stuck. When you are trying your hardest to move forward, but you may not have the skills to make that jump from middle management to the executive level, that can only enhance the feelings of burnout. If youre one of the many people in want of a new career, Veloria has some tips for you1. Remember That Skills Are TransferrableSome professionals feel they cant possible change careers because doing so would mean starting over in an entry-level position. Veloria says that this is a mistaken belief.Of course, you need to do the research on how to get into the career that you want to have, but the important thing is to understand which of your skills can translate, Veloria says. For example, say you work for an advertising agency, but you want to move into health care in some capacity. Veloria says you may want to consider moving into the health care industry by starting in a marketing position at a level that is comparable to your currentrole at the ad agency. And, if youre worried that youlack a couple of the skills you need to make the jump from one career to the next, Veloria wants to remind you of the existence of online certificate programs, MOOCs, and similar training options. There are definitely ways that you can add to your portfolio of skills without having to go back to square one, Veloria says.2. Take Some Time to Understand Yourself and Your Career GoalsLets go back to pretending you work for an ad agency and want to switch over to health care. We told you to get a marketing position with a health care organization.Great, you say.But I dont want to be in marketing. I want to be in health care. What you need to do at this point is some heavy self-reflection.Once youre in the industry, you can examine where your l ong-term pathway lies in that field, Veloria says.A good way to do this is to find a mentor within the organization who can help you map out your new career path. You can have mentors in your company, or mentors in your field, who can help you grow, Veloria says. They can help you find new opportunities that align with your passion, and they can help you understand what it is you need to do to get there.3. Become More Entrepreneurial in Your CareerA mentor can help you blaze a trail to your goals, but, Veloria says, you need to remember that it is your trail to blaze.Dont wait for HR to manage your career, Veloria says. You can manage it for yourself.Veloria believes that professionals looking to make career changes and even those who are not need to become more entrepreneurial and take controlof their careers if they want to succeed. And what does it mean to become more entrepreneurial? Veloria shares an example from her own career thatanswers the question by illustrating it.Velori a spent time in high-level customer tafelgeschirr roles with a number of big-name financial organizations, thereby becoming quite expert in customer experience and satisfaction. When she came to University of Phoenix, however, Veloria wondered how should could use her knowledge of and passion for customer service for the organization. We work a lot on our student experience, and I found a way to fit my skills into that operating environment, Veloria says. I was able to create a brand-new position for myself that didnt exist. I sat down, thought about what was missing, presented the business case for why it was needed, and was able to have that business case accepted. Its important to remember, adds Veloria, that all jobs that you want dont necessarily exist in your company today. Its a bold move but it can be very successful to create the job you want and sell it to the management team. And if you can do that, maybe you wont even need to go through a whole career change. Maybe you can find passion and fulfillment in the field in which you felt burnt out in the first place.

6 Secrets to Job Hunting When Your Kids Are On Summer Break

6 Secrets to Job Hunting When Your Kids Are On Summer Break6 Secrets to Job Hunting When Your Kids Are On Summer BreakSchools out, and if youre unemployed right now you have the rare opportunity to embrace an old-fashioned summer with your kids. As much as you love spending time with them, though, finding the time and energy to juggle a job search while your kids are around 24/7 can be a challenge, but dont worry, its doablePlanStart with a rough outline of your day to balance downtime with your family with the daily hours you need to spend on the job hunt. Civilization breaks down when kids feel lost or bored. Your kids will feel more comfortable if they have a routine. A basic plan also helps you feel secure, knowing that you will get what you need to keep your job search the high priority it should be.CommunicateLevel with your kids about your job search and invite their support. Let them know that you need them on your team and that their self-sufficient behavior during your work hours directly benefits the family. Kids take pride in being a parte of their familys big picture planning. They appreciate being trusted with the real low-down, and they want to help. Ask them for what you need, work it into your plan, and then praise them when they come through for you.Be clear with them about specific expectations for example, when the phone rings and you shut the door, you are fielding an important call and you need to do so undisturbed. While explaining this, use professional language for children over the age of 7. When it comes to younger children, imagine how their teacher speaks and try to mirror that. Either way, aim to sound polished and poised. When children understand the gravity of a situationwhen you speak to their maturitythey rise to the occasion. At the same time you also want to set yourself up for success, so save the more involved phone calls for when you have the house to yourself. This summer, your search is your part-time job, and it deserves to be respected and supported as such. Your family can be a great team backing you up, so give them the chance to impress.EngageThe library is your ally. Many public libraries offer free summer reading programs that give school-age children perks for the books they read and incentivize them to keep reading all season long. Sign your kids up ASAP, and make the library run a part of your weekly routine. Libraries usually have other free and enticing offerings for older children and teens such as writing workshops, crafting classes and book clubs. Plus you will find a host of programs for younger children including reading hours, Lego Clubs and Barbie Clubs. There are plenty of opportunities for you to get some job searching done at a quiet place with all the necessary tools while your kids are happily engaged. The library is doubly beneficial- captivating programming and engrossing take-aways.CollaborateFind other parents who have part-time jobs or who are stay-at-home parents or fel low job seekers. Summer is a great time for hosting easy play dates. You can round up the kids and hit the beach, hiking trails, playground or pool. This way, the onus isnt on you to entertain or to clean up. When the other parents reciprocate, you have a block of time to focus on your search, and you can work from home in a quiet environment. This is also helpful when you secure an interview and need some kid-free hours to impress your future employers.Be flexibleIdentify locations for special outings where you know you can work, the kids can have a good time and you know they will be supervised. Check out fun locations like splash pads or indoor play areas for younger children and trampoline parks, open gyms or climbing walls for older kids. While you may have to pay an entrance fee, that fee covers the cost of the supervision, and as a special treat for all of you, it is money well spentThis is a flexible era in which to be a job seeker, so take your show on the road as much as y ou can. Certainly there are elements of your search that require a quiet space, but there are other parts of the search that can be done on the bleachers or in a deck chair, so relish that freedom.Get HelpWhile it can be expensive to hire professional childcare, there are scores of non-professionals who would be thrilled to have a summer job. Tutoring jobs and babysitting jobs for teens are much more affordable. While you wont have a certified professional, you can pay a neighbor $10 an hour in some locations to come and play outside with your kids while you work. Contact local high schools and churches to see if you can interview some students. Also, if you have teenagers, this may be a good time for them to try their hand at entering the workforce. Getting their professional start by helping out a parent who is working from home is a great way to begin a career as a caregiver. It gives them a chance to learn the ropes in a lucrative industry where work is readily available.Having t he chance to spend the summer with your kids is a wonderful perk of the unexpected situation in which youve found yourself. This can be a truly memorable summer for you and your family, an opportunity to learn and grow together, and maybe by the fall you will all find yourselves preparing for a new adventure.

Fishing in Stocked Ponds and Resume Writing From the Company Perspective...

Fishing in Stocked Ponds and Resume Writing From the Company Perspective...Fishing in Stocked Ponds and Resume Writing From the Company Perspective...Where would you rather fish, folks? In a big ocean with a flimsy rod and reel from a little rowboat, or in a small pond over-stocked with the best, tastiest fish on the planet using the most advanced fish finders from a comfortable boat (and, yes, lets say the beer cooler is stocked, too).Well, read on, and Ill tell you how the answer to that question is also the answer to the fastest way to find your next job.Ive just returned from California, folks I love driving through that great state, and the opportunity to spread Ladders.com message all the way across the airwaves made it a heck of lot of fun. We should have clips for you next week, but suffice it to say we had great conversations on air in San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco (and with papers such as The L.A. Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and The Wall Street Journal). This is an important part of what we do, because we work for you, our Readers. Our now 262,000 Readers represent the cream of the nations crop in sales, marketing, law, finance, technology, operations, HR, and every other discipline. And our job here at Ladders.com, which we take very seriously, is help you find your next job as quickly, as painlessly, and at the highest compensation level, possible. So getting the word out to more and more employers about Ladders.com is a great way for us to help get you there quicker. And even though were already the largest resource for $100K+ jobs on the planet, by far, we?re not going to rest on our heels while even one of our Readers is still looking. So why does Ladders.com work?Well, I was the SVP, Finance Operations at HotJobs.com, and led our sale to Yahoo in 2002. I learned a lot at the 2 job motherboard about how people really get jobs. I also learned a lot about how people don?t get jobs. You see, the big job boards are great for middle-market jobs. These jobs are middling desirable and are filled by mid-level people. For the folks hiring and the folks being hired, at this level it works really, really well.Where the big job boards fail is at the high-level jobs.Because its free for applicants to apply, what do you think happens when you put a really great CMO job up there? Or a fantastic VP Sales, or CFO or Global Systems Manager job?Well, if youve ever been on the receiving end of a firehose (or maybe dumptruck is the better analogy), you?d have a pretty good sense of what recruiters feel like when theyre brave, foolish, or na Ive enough to post great jobs on those middle market boards. Wham They get inundatedNow, my direct phone number is still on our press releases (memo to self change that). But the happy consequence of this is that I still get a lot of calls directly from subscribers and recruiters. And I love to ask recruiters what they think of the system. To a person, they tell me Ladders.com is the greatest inter net resource theyve ever found. The candidates are targeted, the candidates are high-class, and the volume of applications is really reasonable (in fact, the typical job posting on Ladders.com only gets 15 applications versus hundreds on the big job boards). And thats why recruiters love us. Were free, unlike the big job boards, and weve got the best candidates on the planet right here. And thats why recruiters come fishing at Ladders.coms pond. Its easy for them to land the big one. Just like youd pay to fish in a stocked pond (or, I suppose, in this case, youre paying to be the fish in the stocked pond), recruiters post their jobs with Ladders.com because weve stacked the odds way in their favor. So happy fishing, er, nibbling, Readers. Weve got over 4,500 all-new jobs from companies all over this great land of ours. So lets get at it

Engineering with the Animals

Engineering with the Animals Engineering with the Animals Engineering with the AnimalsThe zoo provides endless entertainment for children and adults alike, and has become a common diversion in the US and around the globe. However, few know how much engineering goes into these facilities. Both Len Lundquist and Lewis Anderson are well aware of what goes into a successful zoo, having worked on their share of zoo projects with LKPB Engineers, Inc.In fact, one institution they worked with quite closely welches the Como Zoo, in St. Paul, Minnesota. A big aspect of that project was working with the polar bears. It the habitat was a salt-based system, so we had the challenges to work with the water filtration system. There were the challenges with salt and corrosion and, with polar bears, we had to work around issues relating to cold weather, Anderson says. This was a year-round exhibit, so piping systems and heating systems have to be able to function and pass through areas that might be s ubject to minus 40 Farenheit. But there was also off-exhibit workthat had a den for a female polar bear to go ahead and have a cub, Lundquist explains. That required a focus on the air-handling units to maintain a temperature of around 60 degrees. The air-handling unit is susceptible to very cold temperatures inside the unit, so we then had to specify a complete thermal grade air handling. In warm weather we didnt want to transfer that cold air atmosphere out to the exterior, Lundquist says. Because the temperatures in Minnesota will get to 92 degrees with high humidity and you avoid condensation that way.At Como Zoo Polar Bear Odyssey in Saint Paul, Minnesota. ansehen LKPB EngineersThe polar bears in the off-exhibit area are sensitive to sound and they make sure if they do have rooftop air-handling systems that ventilate the area that they have sound and vibration control. We have emergency generator backup and its about 100 feet away from the building so they dont upset the polar b ear with regard to sound and noise, Lundquist says. But theres a quarantine area to content with, where they take mammals when they are sick or under care of a veterinarian. For the HVAC system, you have to create the negative pressures within the holding area and the filtration is better, Lundquist says. Its more severe or a higher percentage of filtration, like a hospital isolation room. There are indoor exhibit areas that need dehumidification to help with the moisture, says Lundquist. With the air-handling systems or ventilation systems, you have one for the people who are visiting the zoo and one for the off-exhibit area where the dens are because you have these odors. You dont want to transfer them from back in the house to visitors. In winter time, for the viewing area, we have the ability to bring in dry, cooler, outside air and that will dehumidify it.Anderson says they also built the system to recirculate. For example, fiberglass pumps are used against corrosion. After all, you dont want salt in the city sewer and want to retain as much of it as you can from a pollution standpoint and economic standpoint. Theres a whole intricate system of filtration and backwashing to recover as much saltwater as possible and put it back into the exhibit, Anderson says.Eric Butterman is an independent writer.
